HPV self sampling: update regarding screening interval

This is a message from the London HPV Self-sampling Programme Team:

We are writing to inform you of key updates to the London Opportunistic HPV Self-Sampling pathway.

Complete roll-out in general practice

We are pleased to inform you that as of 5th August 2026 opportunistic HPV self-sampling has now been rolled out across London and is accessible to all GP practices in the region. 

Extended intervals

With effect from 7th August 2026, the screening recall interval for individuals aged 25-49 who test negative following an HPV self-sample test, will be extended from three (3) to five (5) years.

 This means that the HPV self-sampling recall intervals for all ages,  will now be in line with the routine Cervical Screening Programme. We are updating the patient information, clinical system tools and professional guidance to reflect this change.
