Freedom to Speak Up Guardians Foundation Training For Appointed Guardians only
Freedom to Speak Up Guardians Foundation Training is mandatory for people appointed to
the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian role in healthcare organisations including NHS trusts
and foundation trusts, national non provider organisations, arms-length bodies,
independent sector and primary care providers.
Foundation training is designed to provide a solid grounding in the background and ethos of
FTSU and the expectations of what is a challenging and far-reaching role.
Specifically, the training helps participants:
- Understand the background and expectations of the role and its importance
in working towards a culture where speaking up is business as usual - Have a better understanding of speaking up and how best to support and respond to
the people who come to them - Think about barriers to speaking up in their organisation and how to help
address these - Reflect on their feelings about the role and next steps to take.
Foundation Training Access:
- Step 1: Once you have been appointed to the role of a FTSU Guardian please access
Foundation Training Part 1 on the NHS Learning Hub: Part 1 of the training involves
independent e-learning consisting of 6 modules. - Step 2: Once you have completed the 6 modules in Foundation Training Part 1, you
must submit all certificates for the 6 completed modules to your line manager and
organisation leader. CQC will inspect FTSU compliance as part of CQC Well-Led
Inspections.
Step 3: Following successful completion of Foundation Training Part 1 e-learning,
you will then need to complete Part 2 foundation training – A facilitated reflective
conversation: Within 3 months you will need to have a reflective conversation with a
registered FTSU mentor from the official list.

Network chair to be added to the Network’s distribution list and directory.
Your registration as a FTSU Guardian will then be complete.
Your ongoing Tenure as a FTSU Guardian:
FTSU Guardians must read the FTSU Guardian Development Guide and Handbook to
continue their professional development and stay up to date with guidance. This can be

N.B If you have already completed the Foundation training and have your certificates, but
not registered yourself with the Guardian Network Chair yet, please ensure to do so.

This training should be completed by all Freedom to Speak Up champions and ambassadors
‘Speak Up, Listen Up, Follow Up’ is the Freedom To Speak Up e-Learning developed in association with Health Education England. It is free and available to all staff working in healthcare.
‘Speak Up, Listen Up, Follow Up’ e-Learning is divided into three modules.
It helps learners understand the vital role they can play in a healthy speaking up culture which protects patient safety and enhances worker experience. You do not have to be an appointed FTSU Guardian access this training. It is available to anybody who would like to register.
