GP Practice/PCN

  • SPIN (Salaried Portfolio Innovation New to Practice Fellowship Scheme) is a programme implemented across London to support all newly-qualified GPs and new to practice GPNs to take up substantive salaried roles. It is crucial in the beginning of their careers that they have a manageable workload, healthy work life balance and educational opportunities to advance their careers. Aimed at improving recruitment into substantive posts within general practice, and enriching the availability of skills and portfolio working within PCNs.
  • GPs and GPNs they will have the opportunity to undertake 1-2 sessions in a portfolio role for up to two years. As well as access to join monthly facilitated peer support groups.
  • Patients benefit from their GP and GPNs’ specialist knowledge and their good working relationships with, and knowledge of, other healthcare partners.
  • Builds goodwill and sense of belonging for newly qualified GPs and GPNs.
  • Practices and host organisations benefit from increased capacity and specialist knowledge.
  • Diversity of thought in both organisations is improved and understanding of primary and secondary care is shared between partners.
  • Truly sustainable cross-sector model.
  • Access to CPD in addition to a funded fellowship.
  • For GPs funding for one session a week for a year is £9,500 and the practice will receive on costs.
  • For GPNs funding for one session a week for a year is £3,800 and the practice will receive on costs.

GPs

  • Qualified within the last 12 months (18 months if they have taken maternity/paternity/adoptive/leave for health and care reasons).
  • Holds a substantive (minimum of 4 session) salaried role in a GP Practice in NW London.

GPNs

  • Are new to general practice within the last 12 months (18 months if they have taken maternity/paternity/adoptive/sick leave).
  • Holds a valid NMC registration.
  • Holds a substantive (minimum of 4 session) salaried role in a GP Practice in NW London.
  • Express interest in supporting SPIN New to Practice Fellows by contacting your local Training Hub Lead and the NW London SPIN New to Practice Project Manager and share any salaried GP or GPN vacancies you may have with them.
  • Once you have recruited a newly qualified GP or New to Practice GPN who will be participating in the SPIN New to Practice Fellowship, you will receive and must sign Memorandum of Understanding to along with the fellow, the local Training Hub and the Portfolio Role Employer.
  • You release the GP/GPN for 1 or 2 sessions per week to allow them to pursue their fellowship and either you or the portfolio host, depending on what is agreed in the MOU, will release them for their peer support session.
  • Following receipt of funding for the one supported session via the Training Hub, the practice will pay the SPIN fellow. Payment arrangements are agreed upon by the SPIN Fellow and the Practice. If the fellowship is based within the practice, it is encouraged that if the fellow has access to an (informal) mentor who can support the fellow with their project and ongoing development during the 2 years.
