Student Nursing Associate Apprenticeship
Study for a Foundation Degree at Level 5 at a University. You will attend University days, placements within other NHS employment areas, such as a Hospital Trust, whilst working within your employed role within General Practice.
Upon successful completion of your work-based learning University Foundation Degree, you will be able to register as a Qualified Nursing Associate with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Key Information:
You will continue to be employed by the General Practice that you work in. Usually, you will work 37.5 hours per week (Full Time), some Universities will allow learners to attend who are working 30 hours per week, but this is the minimum to undertake the course.
The University attendance days and times will vary by University and course intake.
The working times on your placements may also vary depending on the department area you are placed in during the programme.
The course length is generally 2 years, and you must be in employment for the entire length of the apprenticeship.
Before undertaking the apprenticeship, you must have your English & Math’s – either GCSE or to a Functional Skills Level 2 (GCSE grade A to C). If you do not have these, you can gain support in obtaining these by a local educational college or looking at a GOV.uk course searching site for a provider in your area: https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/find-a-course
You MUST have original copies of course certificates that are requested by the University before applying for a course.
There are multiple placements during the programme in different areas of the NHS, these will vary in location. You should be willing to travel both to the University and to different locations for the placements.
Any applicant must have correct UK Right to Work status for the entire duration of the programme as requested by the educational provider.
North West London Universities:
Key Information for Practice Learners and Employing Practices

• The University attendance days and times will vary by institution and course intake.
• The working times on your placements may also vary depending on the department area you are placed in during the programme.
• The course length is generally 2 years, and you must be in employment for the entire length of the apprenticeship.
• Before undertaking the apprenticeship, you MUST have your English & Math’s to a Functional Skills Level 2 – GCSE grade A to C. You should be willing to travel both to the University and to different locations for the placements. You will be out for sessions such as these for a minimum of 20% of the apprenticeship.
• There will be usually TWO placements per academic year during the course length – These MUST be completed and learners have to be released on these placements.
• An employing practice MUST take Reciprocal Placements from the Hospital and Community providers who are providing placements for the practices SNAs during their degree – This is a requirement for practices whose staff are attending this programme.
• Any applicant MUST have correct UK Right to Work status for the entire duration of the programme as requested by the educational provider.
• The employing practice/entity should have the Gov DAS account set up in advance of the apprenticeship starting to allow the learner to start.
• The employing practice MUST have a SSSA (Standards for Supervision & Assessment) trained Nurse to support the SNA apprentice on the duration of their University course, and this will also apply for the reciprocal placement learners as well. This is because it is a REGISTERED programme and supervisors must be trained to the required standard.
• Funding for the learners tuition fees are covered by the apprenticeship scheme and there is an additional training grant available equating to £4,287 per year (correct for the 2026/2027 fiscal year) from NHS England to help support with leaner supervision and learning support payable to the employing practice.
