Introduction to Social Welfare Advice, Welfare Benefits and financial inclusion

Training for Social Prescribing Link Workers and similar roles in North West London

This training programme is sponsored by North West London Integrated Care Board to support social prescribing link workers, health and wellbeing coaches and similar roles, improve understanding of social welfare advice needs of clients of social prescribing. It will enable better identification of those in need of advice and improve ability to support and refer social prescribing clients to advice and other services as needed.

The course covers issues related to the cost of living crisis and fuel and food poverty, including budgeting, money saving tips, understanding the support that is available.

This course will be delivered on line by the Bromley by Bow Centre, the Island Advice Centre and The Benefits Training Company through 4 x 3.0 hour live interactive training sessions

Course learning objectives
  • To be able to identify signs that someone has a social welfare advice issue
  • Build knowledge of the range of issues social welfare advice services can support
  • Understand what a link worker can help with and what needs to be addressed by a trained social welfare advisor
  • Understand how to make an effective referral to social welfare advice services
  • Understand how the benefits system is structured and who can claim each of the benefits which make up the system
  • Be able to complete a basic benefits check to ensure people are claiming their likely entitlements
  • Know how to check that a benefits decision is correct and what to do if it isn’t
  • Know how to talk to clients about their financial situation
  • Understand how to support people to budget and reduce expenditure
  • Understand what support is available to clients with their energy and other costs

There are four courses, each running through June and July 2024.

Each course consists of 4 x 3 hour on-line live interactive sessions.

We have arranged the courses so that link workers and other staff working in the same borough can study together.
